goodbye my friend

Winter doesn't seem to be a good season lately. After losing my grandpa at about the same time last year we had to let our cat O'Malley go to cat heaven. He had kidney failure and we're glad he didn't have to suffer long. We're all very sad because he was a member of our family and everyone who knew him loved him - he was great with strangers and all neighbours, friends and visitors were under his spell. After several days of mourning and not knowing what to write about his death or wether to write about it at all I decided to share his story with you.

On a particularly wet and cold November afternoon in 2006 I saw a cute cat with big round eyes and felted fur sitting in our backyard and looking longingly inside our warm and cozy living room. There were many knots in his fur and big parts of it were felted - it didn't look like he had been combed in several weeks. My parents weren't very amused about having a strange cat sitting in their backyard (at that time, we had already had our cat Mira. She's very shy and often gets into fights with cats from our neighbours so my parents didn't want a strange cat to invade her territory.). I had pity on him and gave him some food and put a box with a blanket inside next to the door.
I checked in regular intervals whether he was still there. I knew that you're not supposed to touch  stray cats because they can have all sorts of bugs etc. but I couldn't get his fluffy fur and his big round eyes out of my mind.

So that evening after my family had gone to bed I sneaked downstairs and - of course - he was still sitting there. The second I opened the door he began to purr and I took him into my bedroom so neither my family nor our cat would see him. I put a blanket on the floor along with some food and a bowl of water. I tried to fall asleep but couldn't stop thinking about that cute cat. A couple minutes after I turned off the light I heard some 'tap tap' noises and something heavy landed on my legs. He came to my side and lay down right next to me, purring really loudly (I was afraid he would wake up the others...) as I petted him. Right the first night he slept in my bed and when I woke up to my alarm clock he was laying next to my feet.

Our other cat Mira is very shy and never slept in my bed nor would she ever sleep on my lap. So having a very cuddly cat was something completely new and amazing to me. I don't exactly remember what happened the following days but my parents figured out pretty quickly that they couldn't just ignore that cat in our backyard. He didn't have a tattoo in his ear so we took him to the vet to check whether he's alright and whether he has a microchip so we could find his owners. Surely someone must miss such a cute kitty?
But he didn't have a microchip. We asked around everywhere and put up posters saying we found a black and white cat but nobody seemed to miss him. We had all his felted fur shaved by the vet and he started to look like the most handsome cat we had ever seen. The vet estimated his age at about 10 years when we found him. My parents tried desperately to get rid off him(kidding... they were just trying to find his proper owners and they didn't want him to invade Mira's territory any longer than absolutely necessary). They told all our neighbours but nobody knew where he came from. Our neighbours told us about some friends who had recently lost a cat and were looking to get a new one. They came over to look at him and they probably would've taken him if I hadn't been a big mess and very protective about him.
We've had him for several weeks already and I couldn't imagine giving him to strangers. I felt like it was my responsibility to care for him since I was the one who found him / let him in. Luckily the people saw what a mess I was and didn't have the heart to take him away from me.

He had so many great qualities that I want to remember. He was really good with people. Whenever a visitor came to our house O'Malley would greet him and he'd get everyone to pet him - even the people who usually don't like pets/cats liked him. He even left quite an impression with my mom's boss when he came to 'get to know her'(as in an informal job interview) so he even helped her get her current job. Whenever someone got home he would go to the front door to greet whoever just came. It's a really great feeling to get home and there's someone waiting for you and happy to see you.

Here are some things I loved about him in no particular order: the cute 'tap tap tap' sound when he walked across wooden floors or tiles with his furry paws. His very loud snoring. The way he would lay down on you when you were laying on the couch watching TV. The elegant way he would cross his paws when he was sleeping. How he would sleep on his back when he was very relaxed and all you could see was white fur but the minute he turned around he looked all black. His whiskers that always stuck out into all directions and made it incredibly hard to take pictures of his face without focusing on his whiskers. The heat he would radiate when he lay on your lap or stomach. How you could still knit or read when he was sleeping on you. How he would lay on the back of the couch right behind your neck and place his tail around your neck. How he would chase after Mira across the backyard but he would always stop right before the boundary to the neighbour's backyard and watch her while she kept running for hundreds of meters. How he would always follow us around the house and into the backyard. He rarely stayed outside when we went inside. How he would always lay down on any kind of paperwork / homework anyone would try to do. How he always wanted to be everywhere we were. Often he would scratch at the bathroom door and I could rarely shower without him laying on the bath rug. Once he even poked his head through the shower curtain but he didn't like getting wet. The way he was always a good boy at the vet. How he would sit outside and wait for someone to open the door for him - he never meowed, he would just move his lips and wait for someone to open (or scratch at the door...). How he would always inspect every box or suitcase. How we would call him Schnubbel or O'Malley and he'd look up when he heard his name. The deep purring sound he made when we combed his fur - for a minute, then he would start to punch the brush. How he would always be creative in finding new sleeping spots - my dad's record player, a stack of newspapers, underneath the Christmas tree, The way he would never beg for human food but always wanted to be close when we ate; he would sleep on my lap while I ate without a problem while Mira had to stay outside so we could eat without having her constantly beg for food. The way he would fall asleep next to me for years. How he made me feel at home the second I walked in and saw him.

We'll never know where he came from and what's his whole story. But we do know that he spent more than 7 wonderful years with us and that it was the best time of my life. We might have given him food and shelter but he gave us back so much more. We'll never forget his unconditional love and he'll always have the center spot in our hearts.

busy but good

MBP_3754
The first week of the new semester is over and I feel like I could use a vacation already. There's so much going on: catching up with friends I haven't seen all summer, making lots of new friends, founding a knitting club at uni, preparing for a craft fair and trying to manage to fit double the course load any sane person would consider taking into a timetable. Life is busy but good. I'm really thankful to have this cute lady to come home to every day. Coming home to a cat makes all the stress and worries from a long day go away.
Have a great week!

it's the little things...

MBP_1026 MBP_1045 MBP_1042 MBP_1050
... that make a cat's life great. Julia brought home a box for Lina to play(and sleep and throw up) in. Of course we had to change the title accordingly. She loves it. There's an 'entrance' on one side so she doesn't have to jump in (she's pretty lazy...) and it's just big enough for her.
She loves 'hiding' from the laser pointer mouse (without realizing that she's too big the box is too small to properly hide in there...) because a bright red box is a perfect hiding spot for a black cat, right?
She also discovered the art of midnight sledding in boxes on hardwood floors. The other day I even found the box upside down and she was hiding under it. Don't ask how she managed to turn it upside down...
Have I mentioned that I once bought a huge, fluffy and soft luxury kitty bed for her that she never even touched?

It's the small and inexpensive things in life that Lina loves most :)

ps: my last exam is on Monday!!!! Which means that sooooon I'll be back with 'proper' blog posts and I have a list with millions things to make and bake during summer vacation. Of course I'll share my projects here :)

oh hey

MBP_0665
Just checking in to say hey. Life has been pretty crazy lately with tons of assignments to do and finals to prepare for... only two weeks till my first final! I'm officially back to my '6 hours of sleep and lots of coffee' finals mode. But hey, only six more weeks until the term is over and I'll have two months off. Yay!!
Lina looks pretty much as exhausted as I feel right now. Not to mention that I had a crazy idea of sewing a quilt in between this whole study madness - you know, after finishing my dress I needed a new big project to work on. So I have a finished quilt top laying around that still needs a border but it seems to be impossible to find a matching white fabric. How difficult can it be to buy a solid white fabric? Apparently pretty difficult considering there only seems to exist 'white white' or 'yellowish white' fabric in Germany. Sigh. But I have two more local fabric stores to check before I start buying random white solids online hoping at least one of them matches my quilt.

In other news, I have a new roomie!!
Her name is Julia and she is the cutest. I have the feeling that we'll be getting into lots of mischief together. I'll introduce her proper on le blog when a) I have taken a picture of her and b) I have confessed that I'm one of those crazy bloggers who reveals some parts of her life online. So far she's handled my craziness (as in crazy cat lady, sewing addict AND funny knitter who regularly meets up with people twice my age and thinks it's normal to call them friends) just fine and even mentioned she'd love to learn how to knit. She's seriously awesome!

around here

It's been an awesome week. My custom rubber stamps from simon's stamps came in the mail today and I'm in love!! There are only some minor German bureaucratic things I have to figure out before I can open my shop. I'll talk more about it in a separate post next week.
I finally got a proper solution for my broken Expedit desk. I love the shelf + desk combo but after the desk's leg broke off due to some minor kitty incident I temporarily added some desk legs my dad bought a while ago. It worked out okay but it didn't look very good and it wasn't very practical either. I finally decided to buy the Alex drawer unit. I love all the extra storage it adds to my sewing table and Lina loves sleeping on it :)

My seedlings are doing great and the first batch of zucchini plants is already planted in my parents' garden. I can't wait to harvest the first zucchinis in a month or so!!
Remember how I promised I'd try to take a picture of the cinnamon pull apart I made for our knitting club meeting last week? Well it's only a quick instagram snapshot but looking at it makes me wanna make another one. Anything with cinnamon never seem to survive more than a day around here.

lazy saturday

MBP_0037
My kitty is having a lazy Saturday, staying in bed all day and even refusing to get up so I can make the bed. That's basically her daily routine; waking me up eeearly and terrorizing me until I get up to feed her. The minute she's done with her breakfast she goes back to bed and won't leave it until something exciting happens (either another meal or a visitor).
What a hard life...
I'm off to a knitting breakfast with some deliciously smelling cinnamon pull apart bread. Yum! I'll try to take some pictures before it's all gone - no promised though.

Have a great weekend!

a sad story

IMG_4797
The summer term started almost three weeks ago and pretty much all the classes I'm taking this term seem to be very time consuming. But having classes from the early morning till the evening is pretty rad because it means lots of knitting time! (Also lots of walking across the campus and thinking 'I need to bring my big camera' whenever I see all the gorgeous trees. I still haven't gotten around to taking proper pictures so I snapped some with my cell phone the other day. I'm so happy it's finally spring over here!)
Yep, I'm one of those annoying knitting in class advocates ;)
So well I've been knitting the still light tunic and it's knitting up much quicker than I had expected. I took this picture two weeks ago after 3 days of knitting. Not bad considering it's knitted with a small needles and thin yarn, right?
IMG_4657
(I got much more likes and comments on this picture than usual on instagram - maybe I should show bare skin more often? haha)

Add a short knitting break while I was studying for an exam and one week of intense in class knitting and I was just two rows away from dividing stitches for the pockets. Which basically means I was done with 3/4 of the body. Then I had a social club meeting (during which I knitted of course) and we went to a bar afterwards. Unfortunately, my knitting project bag didn't make it home afterwards.
I suspect that it must have fallen out of my bike basket on the way home because it wasn't found at the bar. Five skeins of gorgeous alpaca yarn, my bag with my scissors, spare needles, crochet hooks, my row counter, my cute handmade knitting bags... all gone. Not to mention Two weeks worth of knitting.

When I realized it was gone the next morning I was hoping that I had forgotten it at the bar or one of my friends found it and took it home. But so far, nothing. I rode the streets like 10 times, hoping I had dropped it and someone had put it on the sidewalk or something but apparently it's just... gone?

The guy at the lost and found bureau told me to call again next week but I don't think it'll show up again. As you can imagine, my motivation to start something new is pretty much non-existent and I'll need a couple more days to 'grieve' for my knitting bag. So please excuse the non-creative blog content for the next couple of days.

To cheer us all up, here's a short Lina story:
My parents have this really ugly 'Jägermeister' reusable bag that magically appeared in their house one day. Nobody admits to having brought it into the household but just getting rid off it wouldn't be ecologically correct either, so it gets some use occasionally. The other day I collected all my flats and flip flops that were still at my parents' house and the Jägermeister bag was the closest one so I grabbed it. The minute I got home and unpacked my shoes Lina jumped into the bag and whenever I try to take it away from her she gets mad at me and give me the look.
Jägermeister means 'master of hunting' which is pretty ironic considering Lina has been an indoor cat for her whole life and hasn't even managed to catch a spider (at least not since she moved in with me...). Isn't the master of hunting adorable? hehe.

spring decorations

MBP_8545 MBP_8551
MBP_8356 It's still freezing cold where I live and it's hard to believe that, according to the calendar, it's spring already. But Easter is already in a couple of days!
We found the cute knitted bunny at the h+h last week and couldn't resist adopting her (we decided it's girl). We gave her to my dad who's currently recovering from his hip replacement surgery in Hamburg.

The big, fluffy sheep is from a store in Cologne that closes. It was a real bargain and I have a hard time resisting cute sheep like this one. The rest of my 'decorations' is just stuff that has been sitting on my kitchen table since I packed away all the Christmas stuff. It might not be appropriate to have a hen and a bright pink and green flower sitting on the table in January, but that's all I have for now. I'll put 'make winter decorations' on my to do list for next winter.

The pink tulips didn't last long because my kitty thought it was fun to bite off the petals and spit them out in various parts of the apartment. (Not to mention the leaves she would eat and throw up five minutes later...)
Note to self: no more tulips within kitty reach.

52 craft projects // heating pad cover

MBP_8214
Guess what?! She's back!!
I got my Juki back yesterday and - of course - I had to test whether everything works fine. So I made a quick cover for my microwaveable heating pad (those pillows that are filled with wheat or corn or flax seeds or whatever). I bought the heating pad earlier this year and I've been using a cover my mom made a looong time ago that's very 90s.
MBP_8252
I used  super soft flannel fabric that I bought last year at Hamels (it's the best fabric store I've ever been to. Sooo many beautiful fabrics combined with great store samples, really nice staff and the most beautiful view in the world!).
MBP_8328
I used two kam snaps to close it yet be able to wash the cover from time to time.
MBP_8320
Lina seems to like the soft flannel, too; the minute I put the cover on my ironing board to put the kam snaps in she jumped on it. She's very possessive and has this 'don't you dare go near my stuff or you'll regret it' expression.
MBP_8314
But the second she realizes I'm taking pictures her expression changes into "HELP! Someone is pointing a CAMERA at me!!!" as if I'm attempting to kill her. Cats are funny creatures :)

This is project #9 of 52 craft projects I'm attempting to complete in 2013.

the good, the bad, and the in-between

hang in there...

MBP_6954 MBP_6950

... I'll be back in a couple of days. For now, Lina will keep you company. She seems to love my mom's Varier Move ergonomic stool (although she doesn't quite grasp the concept of moving while resting yet... but it seems to be a comfy place to sleep.)

a weekend at my parents'

photoMBP_6737_DSC0013 _DSC0021_DSC0061

Lina and I spend the weekend at my parents' house. Lots of studying (and some test knitting) for me and lots of exploring for Lina. She managed to open a drawer, climb in and close it. She looked rather grumpy when we opened the drawer, hah!

She also helped me study (her favorite activity is laying down on my hand while I'm writing), watched my mom quilt (a long arm machine seems to be rather fascinating - from all perspectives). She really enjoys having a huge home as her 'territory' and she gets along with my parents' cats quite well. She claimed one of the couches as her own and enjoys getting lots of attention :)

Baking Days

MBP_3758 MBP_3765 MBP_3752 MBP_3746 MBP_3749 MBP_3803

Here are some sneak peaks of some of the Christmas cookies I've baked with friends and family. Sheepish cookies, gingerbread, nice company, six cookie jars full of delicious things and a curious cat to keep us company. What else could you ask for?!

in my kitchen

MBP_3503 MBP_3274 MBP_3229 MBP_3195 MBP_3502

I love fall. I love spending cozy evenings at home with friends, sipping tea and knitting. But what I love even more about fall is that it seems legitimate to bake like every week. Several times. I love kneading soft, deliciously smelling dough, the excitement of seeing yeast bread rise, trying new recipes and above all sharing delicious homemade cakes and bread with friends and family.

It took me about 10 years to figure out how to separate the eggs without getting bits of the yolk into the white: an egg separator! I gave in and bought one of those fancy egg separators that has two 'chambers' for the egg white and yolks. It's amazing how much easier a little piece of plastic makes a baker's life :)

I hate complaining on this blog and 'spreading negative energies' but have I mentioned that having a kitchen facing north can be quite frustrating? I love baking. And eating. And photography. So naturally I also love food photography. But taking pictures in a dark kitchen with very harsh lights can be quite a challenge. When we chose the tiles for the kitchen floor I insisted on very light ones hoping that they would 'reflect' some of the natural light that comes in through the window. Whenever I take pictures in the kitchen, I roll the little kitchen cart away from the window and but the stuff I'm about to photograph on the floor right in front of the window. Next, I take a chair to stand on and take pictures from above. I'm sure the neighbors are wondering what kind of 'gymnastics' I do right in front of our kitchen window ;) But it works really well!

Having a bright kitchen with lots of natural light made it to the top of my 'dream home' list (right behind a fireplace)! Are you also stuck with a dark kitchen and a cat that loves occupying your kitchen chairs and leaving a trail of fur behind?

sewing with a cat around and patchwork coasters

Yesterday evening, I decided to make some coasters that I had planned to make for months. So I grab a couple of fabrics from my very small stash(aka fabrics I 'borrowed' from my mom) and decided I needed some tea before I could get started. When I got back, I found this:
MBP_3026
Lina pretending to be asleep. I was only gone for 4-5minutes... no cat can wake up, walk/climb across the room to my desk, find a comfortable sleeping spot and fall asleep deeply within that time period, right?!
MBP_3024
She looked at me curiously/suspiciously as to what I was up to when I came closer to her to remove her from my fabrics. After all, I put the fabrics there to cut them, not for her to have a new place to sleep.
MBP_3012
When I attempted to move her she gave me the meanest look she has, signaling that there's no way she'd give up her new sleeping spot without a fight. I was the one who gave in(of course... she's probably the most stubborn cat I know) and postponed my sewing session to today. Here's what I made:
MBP_3040
Log cabin coasters! In the beginning, I tried to figure out which size to make on my own. The very first quilt(/wall hanging) I made was a log cabin so it's a pattern I'm familiar with. Although that was like 17 years ago... I ended up being too lazy to do the math on my own and googled it. Sure enough there was a pattern just the way I had imagined them to be so I used the measurements from here. I made two different sets of 4 because I couldn't decide on just four different fabrics. The cute sheep fabric in the center is a Japanese fabric my mom got in a scraps bag. The second center fabric is a Kaffe Fassett design that was a gift from a friend. I love how bright and colorful it is and since the coasters are reversible, I can use the back and have 8 similar coasters for big parties :)
MBP_3032 MBP_3045 MBP_3067 MBP_3050 MBP_3081
ps: I made those vanilla cookies a couple days ago and they're sooo yummy. I seriously can't wait for December when it's legitimate to bake/eat cookies and chocolate every day :)
