2016 goals

The beginning of the new year usually involves writing a couple of goals on a sheet of paper and forgetting about them about a month into the year. This year, I'm using the Get To Work Book as my daily planner. I used the first project page to write down my goals so I won't forget about them this year. I also use this page as a goal tracker.

There are three abstract goals and some specific personal and creative goals this year.

This year, I want to let go of things I don't need, unhealthy relationships that held me back and high expectations I set for myself. This sounds dramatic but the past months were tough and instead of doing 'what's right' I need to do what's right for me.
Be happy is my mantra for the new year. I want to focus on the positive things and do what makes me happy. Very abstract as well but I have a blog post planned explaining this one.
Last but not least, I want to create more. Creating is what makes me happy and gives me a creative balance to school / work. But this does not only relate to crafts, but also to friendships. I'm moving from my hometown in Germany to South Carolina soon and I want to make an effort to meet lots of new people there and create many new memories.

Apart from these three main goals, I have six personal goals I want to accomplish.

Visit five new states. I love traveling and living in the states for eight months is a great opportunity to visit some new states. South Carolina will obviously be one of them but I'm also excited to explore some more Southern states. Hawaii would be awesome but for now that's just a dream, not a plan ;)

Use my big camera more often. Photography is one of my passions but having a smartphone and being and instagram addict (@froggeddesigns) does not encourage using a DSLR often. I just got a new lens so in addition to my trusty 50mm prime lens, I now also own a 24-85mm zoom lens. This will justify bringing my camera much more often and it will be great for documenting my travels.

Read / listen to 12 books. I read a couple of pages every evening but the list of books I completed reading last year is small. Listening to audio books when I sew or take a walk has become a habit that will hopefully make this goal an easy one.

Keep up with my 5 year diary. Sam got me hooked on this one and I love it. I use this some lines a day version and I love it. It is a pretty big format but I love that there aren't any lines so you can also draw in it.

Make more money than I spend. My basic goal with this one is to have some savings when I finish school. I'm very lucky to have parents who support me while I'm in school but I want to be able to support myself when I finish school. Running a small business and doing an internship that pays well certainly helps with this one.

70k steps a week. I've had my fitbit for 18 months now and I love it. Walking 10k steps is unrealistic for me because I usually have some very active days and some "stay at home and sew all day" days. But reaching 70k steps per week should be doable.

This year's creative goals are very yarn-heavy because I'll be spending eight months abroad and I'm not sure whether I'll have a sewing machine at my disposal or not.

Knit three sweaters. I love knitting (and wearing) sweaters but I often opt for plain vanilla socks because they're easier to carry in my handbag. There are hundreds of sweater patterns in my revelry favorites and on my pinterest sweater board. There's also plenty of sweater-quantities of yarn in my stash. Now I just need to take the time to cast on a cozy sweater or two.

Make more clothes than I buy. There aren't many clothes that I need to buy (a new pair of jeans and a trench coat have been on my list for years) so this one should be doable. I'm also excited to sew some things that have been on my to-do list for years.

Sew a quilt or two. Do I really have to explain this one?

Learn more about the textile industry. I'd love to tour a spinning mill and learn about raising sheep / alpacas. Learning about ethically produced clothes and about the fabric industry would be awesome, too. Learning where the fabrics / yarns / fibers we buy come from and how they are produced will hopefully lead to smarter buying decisions and focusing on quality vs. quantity.

Learn three new knitting techniques. I feel like I always use the same techniques I learned years ago. The only new technique I learned last year was brioche knitting (thank you, Stephen West.). I'm excited to try some new techniques - fair isle is on my list. And knitting socks on circular needles, two at a time. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Learn three new spinning techniques. This one will be easy since there is still so much to learn about spinning consist yarn. I'm looking forward to learning new drawing techniques and try different plying methods.

Take a class. The point here is to learn something new. Maybe woodworking. Or a pottery class. Or calligraphy. Or weaving... so many ideas!

Destash yarn. I'm at a point where I own more yarn than I can use up in the next decade. I want to use yarn I love and find a new home for the yarn I'm not excited about anymore.

Knit a pair of socks per month. After using up all my sock yarn stash a couple years ago and spending the last two years knitting scrap socks, I bought a bunch of Opal sock yarn off eBay. Time to reduce that sock yarn stash again.

New website. After paying horrendous DaWanda fees last year, I want to create (with some help of friends / my sister) a website that includes my shop and my blog. This shall be interesting since I don't know much about coding. Maybe I should take a CSS class?

Blog once a week. This goal is supposed to help me accomplish my other goals. Needing to come up with content for this blog at least once a week will encourage me to create something / take pictures to have something to share. Also, I love my little blog and I don't care that it's supposedly a "dying medium". I enjoy reading and writing blogs so I just do what makes me happy :)

2016, here we go!

hello, november!

<3
Photo was taken almost exactly three years ago in Victoria, BC, Canada.

I love November! The month is usually calm compared to October (exams, start of the new term, lots of birthdays) and December (exams, lots of shop orders, CHRISTMAS). So here are a couple of goals I set myself for the next 30 days:

  • finish the Christmas quilt (that I started last year...)
  • bake a sweet potato pie
  • finish decorating my sewing room
  • learn a new spinning technique bought the craftsy class 'drafting from worsted to woolen' by Jacey Boggs Faulkner and learned so much, it's overwhelming!
  • finish knitting at least five Christmas presents
  • knit a pattern from a book. (done! though I can only share the project after Christmas...)
  • publish my first knitting pattern
  • walk at least 6k steps each week
  • read a book. I cheated and had a CD read it to me, but I finished 'Fall of Giants' by Ken Follet & loved it!!
So many fun things to look forward to!
Do you have any (crafty) plans for November?

new year's preparations

I'm spending New Year's with a dear friend of mine in Frankfurt. Our plan is to eat, watch movies and knit. Perfect, right? Here's the yarn I'm using for my next knitting project: the Romy cardigan!
I'm excited to finally use this lovely, soft and very fluffy alpaca yarn I bought last summer. I created a project page on ravelry so you can stalk my progress. One of my 2014 resolutions is to keep track of my wips so a) I won't have a bunch of wips at the same time and b) I don't find wips scattered around the apartment that I completely forgot about (like the shawl I started in 2011... or the cardigan I casted on in Vancouver...) - wish me luck!

I'll be back next year with the rest of my 52 craft projects (sorry I didn't have time to post them this year but there were just too many Christmas presents that I didn't want the recipients to see before they actually got it) and my new project for 2014!

52 Craft Projects

52craftprojects2013 I'm happy to announce that this year I set myself the goal to accomplish 52 craft projects. I loved the 52 Knits project from last year but I feel bad because I've neglected my sewing machine. Also, I'm taking up a new hobby: spinning! So expect some spinning and yarn dying adventures on the blog this year.

I've been thinking about 'rules' that I should stick to but for now I'm just hoping to create 52 things this year. I still need a bunch of home decor stuff for my apartment and I've been wanting to sew a dress for years. So I'm (hopefully) gonna tackle that this year. And have I mentioned that I have a cute jelly roll that I've been wanting to use for a quilt?

Of course I'll still knit a bunch this year (I already started my first project of the year... a daybreak shawl!). But having a broader goal gives me sooo many possibilities. I'm excited!

So hello 2013, let's hope for a fun and productive year. Let's roll!

thoughts on the 52 Knits project

MBP_5716

I'm delighted to say that I've finished this project. Let me be honest, I didn't think I'd accomplish any of my 2012 goals. But turns out I'm more likely to stick to goals when there's some pressure from blog readers.

I've knitted a bunch of stuff, from cat toys to shawls to dish clothes to sweaters. I'm delighted at the mountain of projects I knitted this year (minus a bunch of stuff I gave away!). That's a mountain of over nine pounds of knitted items!

It's a great feeling to finish a year-long project and call it a success. I couldn't be happier about how it turned out. I learned a lot from knitting 52 projects. New knitting techniques, what kind of yarn works well for me, how to read different 'chart languages' and how important good tools are.

I rarely left the house without a project bag. Turns out those short knitting moments (knitting on the bus, in-between classes, in class, while waiting in line, ...) add up to several pairs of socks over a year.
I conquered my fear of knitting in public during my year in Vancouver. Knitting in public helped me make lots of friends and I had many great conversations with strangers on the busses. Turns out Canadians are really fascinated by knitters and have a bunch of questions, whereas most Germans either look at me in a funny way or just ignore my obsession.

I also learned a lot about photography. Taking pictures without a tripod can be challenging but it's definitely fun. I used to get anxious when other people touch/use my camera, but over the past year I had to pass my camera to so many people to take pictures for me(and none of them broke it) that I'm fine with other people handling my camera. I probably explained the basics of shutter speed and aperture about a hundred times this past year and how to change the focal point.

Handing over my camera to other people resulted in a bunch of different styles of photography and composition ideas I wouldn't have come up with on my own.
All of the 52Knits photos were taken with my Nikon D7000 + 50mm 1.4G lens. I couldn't be happier with my camera! Some shots were taken using my iPhone 4 which makes decent pictures. I also loved being able to share the projects right away on instagram('froggeddesigns') and getting to know some awesome knitters.

Probably the most important thing I learned is that not every pattern works with every yarn. I frogged several projects simply because they wouldn't go together. Also, some patterns just weren't for me. Take for example the buttercup sweater. I casted it on three times using two different yarns but it simply wouldn't work out, although all other people who knitted it said the pattern is wonderful. I guess I'm not meant to knit it.

Investing in good tools is really worth it. I started of with a bunch of knitting needles my mom gave me and lots of flea markets. My first investment was a set of knitpicks interchangeable circular needles. There are always people out there who complain about needles but I couldn't be happier with them. I added a bunch of DPNs over the past year and a beautiful custom-made yarn bowl. The latest addition to my knitting gadgets is a daylight lamp my mom got me for Christmas and a wooden yarn holder.

Sneak Peak: ReStyled Volume I

Remember my January Goals? Yes, there was something about doing one ReStyle Project. I came up with the idea in December, but until I had all the supplies and figured out what exactly I wanted... well. It took me some time but I started ReStyling today :)

Unfortunately, it isn't finished yet. Soo... I'll have to finish it tomorrow. This is just a little sneak peak...

Sneak Peak: ReStyle I

The project involves a camping mat, a sewing machine and lots of unseaming!!

Go figure it out or come back tomorrow :)

2011

Happy New Year!

DSC_2318

My long-term goals for 2011:

1) Do at least one ReStyle Project a month.

This one will be so much fun. I have some ideas for ReStyling parts of my bedroom. Also I'll move out this year (university, yay!) so I'll have a good excuse to buy vintage, cheap furniture and ReStyle it according to my taste.

2) Blog regularily

I've wanted to start a blog for quite some time but I wasn't sure whether I had the time to do so. Well, my 2011 goal will be to establish a healthy blog life, meaning keep up an interesting blog with DIYsregular features and get to know new people from the blogger scene and learn how to manage my blog-time. Meaning do NOT start a Saturday morning with readings blogs for 3 hours. haha

3) Finish School

I'll have my final exams in May (panic!!) and since studying abroad (I'm dreaming of either Canada or London... we'll see) is quite expensive I'm ambitious to get good grades to have more scholarship opportunities. We'll see how that goes...

4) New shopping habits

Basically I wanna stop spending a lot of money on clothes. Which means I'll try to sew my own clothes. I've never done anything like that before but I'm quite excited about the possibility to sew clothes exactly like I wanted them to be. Furthermore, I want to go thrift shopping rather than go to the local H&M store just because it's more convenient. Sadly there aren't any decent thrift stores in my town but I plan on going on shopping trips to bigger cities :)

5) Capture the moment

Since I've got an awesome camera now I'll try to take a picture a day. I know I won't keep up with this challenge but I can at least try, right? Also I plan on sharing the pictures I take. So check out my flickr from time to time and kick my butt if I get lazy ;)

Do you have goals you wanna reach or work on in 2011?
